Set up in 2001, the .NAME gTLD is the single TLD meant for personal websites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other designations people are known by. At the beginning, only 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you desired to register john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already taken 3rd-level domains remained running.
